The Need for a Healthy Brain

There’s always been so much talk about the need to keep your body healthy. We know the importance of maintaining a healthy weight and incorporating exercise into our lives. But as important as it is to keep the body healthy, it’s that much MORE imperative to look after our brain. After all, if our brain doesn’t function, our body won’t either.

Society continues to take mental health for granted; on average 1 in 4 adults in the US suffer from serious mental disorders that can possibly lead to disability in the future. According to statistics, anxiety and depression account for the majority of the disorders.

We need to monitor our mental health, the same way we keep an eye on our weight and pulse rates.

Physical and mental health are not mutually exclusive. Emotional wellbeing directly impacts physical health, our mood and cognitive ability. Noticed how your body feels when you haven’t had a good night’s sleep? Or how you are low on energy when you’re experiencing stress?

The mind and body are connected; ignoring the health of one, will inevitably affect the other.

6 Pillars of Brain Health

Exercise

Those who exercise have a lower chance of developing Alzheimer’s Disease in the future. Exercise increases blood flow to your brain and triggers positive chemical changes. As a result, your brain is more alert and it’s easier to learn and think clearly. It also keeps your mood elevated.

Food & Nutrition

You’ve hear it before and it is true – you are what you eat.

As we age, our brain undergoes a process called oxidation, largely from exposure to stress and toxins from our lifestyles. Oxidation is what leads to the development of rust on your bike chains and browning of cut up apples – yea, it’s not great for the brain. Watching your diet by enriching your body with nutrients and using antioxidants to rid it of harmful toxins will keep your brain functioning optimally.

Medical Health

High blood pressure, diabetes, depression, obesity, higher cholesterol, head trauma and smoking all make you more likely to develop dementia. You can take steps to lower the risks of developing such conditions. Go for annual check-ups, follow your doctor’s advice and take any medications/supplements as prescribed.

Sleep & Relaxation

A good night’s rest is necessary for your brain to function optimally. Other than providing you with energy to get through the day, it enhances mood and strengthens your immune system. In addition, it restricts the buildup of beta-amyloid plaque (abnormal protein) in that brain that has been linked to Alzheimer’s Disease.

Mental Fitness

You need to exercise your brain just like you work-out your body. Mental exercise enhances your brain’s functioning and stimulates the growth of new brain cells reducing the chances of developing dementia.

Social Interaction

Having an active social life has proven to lower memory loss. Engaging in interesting conversations and staying connected to loved ones is crucial for mental health and emotional well-being. Active community members experience comparatively slow cognitive decline.

Prioritizing Personal Development

Personal development is a life-time commitment; it’s an ongoing process that runs through your professional and personal life.

If you haven’t already prioritized personal development, here’s why you need to do it:

1. It pushes you out of your comfort-zone

Your comfort zone may be a safespace but it’s preventing you from growing. With a personal development plan, you can outline a plan that can help you address problem areas and weaknesses that are holding you back from reaching your potential.

You can’t fully experience life if you remain in your comfort-zone.

2. Develops your strengths

When we’re drowning in negativity, we often forget that we have particular strengths that can help us get out tough spots. Personal development programs like ours can be used to nurture strengths and use them to attain personal and professional goals.

3. Give your confidence a boost

When you take steps to overcome your weaknesses, you’ll feel more confident. Achieving goals, acquiring new skills and working to fix areas of your life restores faith in your capabilities; it helps you feel more confident. The more confidence you have, the more opportunities you’ll open up for yourself.

4. It enhances self-awareness

Personal development and self-awareness go hand to hand. Personal development allows you to take a hard look at yourself and identify areas that can use improvement. You’ll learn who you really are as a person, your values and what you need to lead a fulfilling life.
